The roots of IFEVA can be traced back to the research group led by Professor Alberto Soriano (Professor of Plant Physiology and Phytogeography, Facultad de Agronomía,University of Buenos Aires [FAUBA]) during the 1960´s; and several of the current lines of research at the Institute derive from work done in that initial period. As from 1981, CONICET supported this unit through PROSAG (Research program in productivity of agricultural systems).

IFEVA was created by the Council of the University of Buenos Aires on June 3rd, 1987 (Res. CS 1342), and adopted with the same acronym by the CONICET Board on October 15, 1991 (Res. Dir. 834), and is supported by both institutions as from that time.

The mission

IFEVA`s mission is to conduct basic and applied research in plant physiology and ecology related to agronomic problems and to the sustainable use of natural resourses.

Its main objectives are:

  1. to increase knowledge of the biology, structure and function of agricultural systems at their different levels of complexity and biological organization.
  2. To train researchers and university lecturers.
  3. To promote the induction of new human resources into scientific reasearch, through the supervision of undergraduate and post-graduate scholars (see La relación entre el becario y su director en el contexto del trabajo de tesis).
  4. To contribute to higher level training through active involvement in higher degree and diploma programs.
  5. To make public new scientific knowledge by publishing the work of the Institute`s members in research and general interest journals.

Basic norms for the conduct of the staff

The Institute recognises its staff as its greatest asset and seeks to create an environment where all persons are treated equitably and with respect, where persons' rights are respected and where staff and student efforts are encouraged and their achievements given due recognition. The Institute values a collegiate environment as the best means of fostering the advancement of knowledge.

The purpose of the Code of Conduct is to guide and enhance the conduct of staff in performing their duties in the collegial environment of the Institute. The Code applies to all officers and employees of the Institute, whether full-time, part-time or casual appointees. Visiting and adjunct academics and students, are also expected to act in a manner consistent with the ethical obligations, while participating in the life of the Institute community.
